Victory For Chile as St Mark’s
Win Fair Trade World Cup

On the hottest Friday this year it was all about Chile at Tavernspite CP as St Mark’s clinched victory at the first Fair Trade World Cup Fairtrade Football Tournament.
Tavernspite teacher’s Richard Henton and Julie Houghton, with Fair Trade In Football Campaign Founder, Sharron Hardwick, organised the Fairtrade football tournament. Fair Trade Wales’ Janie Pridham, Pembrokeshire, with Helen Bradley and Tristan Humphries, travelling from Cardiff, joined the team.
The 12 schools involved played as World Cup qualifying, Fairtrade Producer Countries, representing their countries in style!
Hosts Tavernspite’s welcoming window display featured Argentina (and Mr Henton!). Cameroon (Neyland) arrived wearing hats, carrying team flags. Mexico’s (Johnston) kits bore their country's flag, carrying a: “Come on Mexico” banner. Ecuador (Stepaside) wore Ecuadorean woolly hats. Uruguay’s (Llys hywel) bibs featured Fairtrade and school Logos, with country flag on reverse. Sponsored by Dave Busby, Wales Environmental, were: “Saundersfoot School FAIRTRADE FOOTBALL” Fairtrade printed kits.
With weather like Rio, teams were spurred on by flag bearing Broad Haven and Tavernspite’s talented teams of cheerleaders, with chants, kicks and balancing tricks!
“I was impressed with the quality of football and how the schools got on into the s pirit of the Fair Trade World Cup. Decorated kits, flags, banners and cheer leaders created a great atmosphere. I thank everyone for their amazing support of Fairtrade.” said Sharron Hardwick.
The Fairtrade tournament kicked off with group stages, playing 8 minute games, refereed by 6 pupils from Dyffryn Taf.

Semi Finalists were winners of: Group 1 - Ivory Coast (Lamphey),
Group 2 - Chile (St Marks) and Group 3 - Costa Rica (Tenby Juniors) who were unbeaten, keeping a clean sheet and best runners up, Colombia (St Aidans) on goal difference.
Finalists Chile (St Mark’s) and Costa Rica (Tenby), warmed up by playing with a Zanzibar ball made of rubbish. The football throughout the tournament, however, was far from rubbish!

Tenby were marked favourites, but it was St Mark’s staunch defence and determination, driven on by devoted coach and Head Master, Mr Owen, that gained them the victory!
Award’s Sponsored by New Life Christian Fellowship were presented by Fair Trade Wales: medals to 3rd Place Ivory Coast (Lamphey), beating St Aidan's in the play offs. Medals and a Trophy to Runners Up Costa Rica (Tenby). The Fair Trade World Cup, donated by Graham Thorley, was raised by the Champions, Chile (St Marks).

The Special Achievement Award, was presented to Archie (Tenby Juniors) for outstanding play and goal scoring.
The Golden Boot, judged by Phillip Evans (Greenhill) and Joel Moody (Swansea FC Community Trust) was awarded to St Mark’s stone wall defender and final goal scorer Jack.
“Our pupils had a ball. There was nothing but praise for the entire event from staff and pupils. As we have over 40 pupils in the year group and only 7 took part, we had a celebratory party when they got back, what a great atmosphere. One pupil suggested the tournament should go on yearly to highlight the need for fair trade throughout the world.” said Saundersfoot teacher Nina Booth.
Ghana (St Oswalds) carried three brilliant banners featuring Ghana and Fairtrade facts as their entry for the Fairtrade Producer Profile Competition.
