Kilgetty AFC Extend Fairtrade Football Support

Kilgetty AFC will be playing more Fairtrade football after the Fair Trade In Football Campaign donated 11 new Fairtrade footballs to the club. Funded by Hub Cymru Africa, the Fairtrade footballs will be used in young people’s football activities, including the Kilgetty AFC Football Festival taking place on Monday 1st May.

Kilgetty Under 10s, with manager Jamie Bessant, were keen to kick off their support of Fairtrade at this week’s training session when Kilgetty resident and Fair Trade In Football Campaign founder, Sharron Hardwick, paid a visit.

The youngsters are following in the footsteps of League 3 Champions Kilgetty AFC first team, who started using Fairtrade footballs in their training last year.

“I am pleased that Kilgetty AFC are keen to use Fairtrade footballs in their events and training. The club offers a great service to the local community, especially with events like their Football Festival. By using and promoting Fairtrade footballs Kilgetty AFC are also supporting Fairtrade football stitching communities in Sialkot, Pakistan.” said Sharron Hardwick.

Workers making Fairtrade footballs are guaranteed a better deal, with safe and fair working conditions and no forced or child labour. Fairtrade workers, their families and communities also benefit from the extra money paid to them via Fairtrade Premiums on the sale of each Fairtrade certified football. To date, a free eye clinic, bus transport for workers, free school equipment, a fair price shop and a water filtration system serving the whole community have been purchased with Fairtrade Premiums.

“"We are keen supporters of the Fair Trade in Football Campaign. We're very grateful to Sharron for providing the Fairtrade footballs again. As a community-based Club, the principles of the campaign aligns very well with our own club philosophy of fairness and opportunity" said Lukas Gamble.
